Throne and Liberty: Major Changes on the Horizon and the Challenges Ahead
Introduction to Throne and Liberty's Evolution
Today we're going to talk about the massive changes that have already happened to Throne and Liberty, the big changes that are going to happen this year, and why I think it's heading in the right direction. However, I'm not sure if these changes will be enough to save the game when it hits the West.
NDA Beta Test and My Involvement
Throne and Liberty is actually having an NDA beta test in the West that is starting on Wednesday, the 10th. I'm filming this on Monday night and not 100% sure when it will release, but I haven't played the test yet. All of the information gathered today is from the dev updates and what the Korean devs and MMOexp have actually told us, rather than being based on the Amazon Games NDA test.
Initial Impressions and Issues in Korea
When Throne and Liberty was released in Korea, I played it and reached around level 45 before being purged due to a verification issue. The game, upon release, was a bit of a zero-sum PVP nightmare, with significant pay Throne and Liberty Lucent to win elements. However, I believe the devs are taking significant measures to change this, which might make it less popular in Korea but more interesting to the Western audience.
Combating Bots with AI Systems
One notable change is the addition of an AI system to detect bots, using a mechanism where your character dies, and you have to complete a captcha to re-enter the game. This has significantly decreased the number of bots, which were a huge problem.
Adjustments to PVP Mechanics
The core of the game remains PVP-focused, particularly within guilds. They're addressing issues with PVP alliances, which were creating massive, zerg-like battles. They plan to change how guilds fight over Boon Stones and Rist Stones by making it a one-guild versus one-guild scenario, reducing the zerg effect.
Guild Ranking System Concerns
A new declaration model for PVP events will see the highest-ranked guilds getting the most chances to participate. While this reduces zerging, it might make the game feel like a job due to the guild rank system, potentially causing stress for some players.
Future Cross-Server PVP and Arena Content
Cross-server PVP is planned, with more PVP content being added, including an arena with rating, ranking, and matchmaking for smaller scale skirmishes. They also plan to add a faction vs. faction PVP zone.
Enhanced PVE Content and Group Finder
On the PVE side, they've added more raids, dungeons, and removed auto-play and auto-travel. Leveling has been sped up, and they've introduced a group finder, which is working well.
Overall Game Direction and Western Release
Throne and Liberty is making all the right changes, shifting from mass zerg PVP to more balanced encounters. They plan to balance PVP events by allocating equal numbers to each side. These changes take time, and the game might see a Western release towards the end of this year or early next.
Potential Obstacles: Pay-to-Win Elements
Despite positive changes, the game includes pay-to-win elements, particularly through a real-money trading post. While top-tier players might not be affected, casual players will likely face disadvantages. The extent of pay-to-win issues is hard to gauge without playing the game intensely.
